The Big Foot (No, Not That One!) / Fanny Mills (1860 – 1892)

Milroy’s disease is a familial condition caused by abnormalities in the lymphatic system. Most notably, it leads to an unusual swelling of the legs and other body parts. Milroy’s disease was popularized mainly by Fanny Mills, an Ohio native known as ‘The Big Foot Girl.’ She was reportedly offered a yearly salary of $5K to perform with a circus (a whopping fortune at the time).

Even though Mills was a successful entertainer, her health condition got in the way of her happiness constantly. She was always accompanied by her nurse Mary Brown and even ended up marrying her brother William.
