The Weight of Being Thin / The Living Skeleton (1841 – 1887)

Isaac W. Sprague was an ordinary boy until the age of 12. After swimming in a lake, he became sick and started losing weight very quickly. No matter how much Sprague ate (he reportedly had a big appetite), he couldn’t avoid getting thinner and thinner. His condition got in the way of his professional career, as he was unable to perform most jobs.

Sprague eventually decided to give in and, while he wasn’t the biggest fan of the circus, started performing as ‘The Skeleton Man.’ He tried to leave show business a few times but returned to it again and again due to pending debts and financial distress.
