The Curious Case of Alice E. Doherty / The Minnesota Woolly Girl (1887 – 1933)
In the world of sideshow acts, there’s no shortage of unique individuals. And yet, Alice Elizabeth Doherty was still a one-of-a-kind woman. Even though all of her family members looked like regular people, she was born with an extremely rare condition known as hypertrichosis lanuginosa.
The condition caused her to have abnormally large body hair on pretty much her entire body. She looked so uncanny that she started performing in sideshow acts at the age of two! Sadly, Elizabeth didn’t even enjoy working in show business and retired as soon as her family allowed her to. She passed away in 1933, aged 46.
