180º of Madness / The Human Owl (1886 – 1955)
The German-American sideshow performer Martin Laurello is one of the most notorious circus performers of the early 20th century, as he was able to turn his head back 180 degrees. Popularized as The Human Owl, Laurello performed with multiple circus groups before passing away in 1955.
Initially, The Human Owl could turn his head back “a mere” 120 degrees. Born with a slightly bent spine, he practiced for three years to get his 180-degree neck. We don’t know about you, but we’re getting a stiff neck just looking at him. A dog and cat trainer as well, Laurello attracted massive crowds in his heyday.
