The Girl Who Was a Bird / Koo-Koo (1879 – 1960)

Affectionately named Koo-Koo, the Bird Girl suffered from an extremely rare nanosomic disorder called Virchow-Seckel syndrome. The condition, also known as bird-headed dwarfism, often includes intellectual disability and a receding mandible. It’s mainly characterized, however, by large eyes with palpebral fissures and a “beak-like nose.”

Before turning into a circus legend, Koo-Koo was rescued from a mental asylum. She was dressed like a bird, so her bird-like features could stand out even more. Her shoes were like chicken feet, and her jacket was meant to imitate feathers. Despite her health issues, Koo-Koo lived a long and happy life before passing away in 1960.
