Let’s face it: in today’s world, few people would pay a dime to see a tattooed woman. But before tattoos became as common as bread and butter, a beautiful lady covered in ink was unique-looking enough to get her own sideshow act. That surely was the case with Artoria Gibbons, a Norwegian immigrant who became the number-one tattooed lady in the United States.
She was fortunate to be married to a talented tattoo artist who covered her body with images inspired by the likes of Michelangelo and Raphael. She performed with the Ringling, Barnum & Bailey Brothers Circus, and the Hagenbeck–Wallace Circus.
