The Three-Year-Old Adult / Schlitzie Surtees (1901 – 1971)

One of the few iconic American sideshow superstars to be born in the 20th century, the uncanny Schlitzie Surtees was born with a condition known as microcephaly, which caused him to have a tiny brain and skull. He was also born with severe intellectual disability, to the point of—allegedly—having the cognition of a three-year-old child.
Schlitzie was nonetheless able to become a bonafide American legend, mainly by working as a circus performer and starring in the aforementioned “Freaks.” Throughout his life, Schlitzie was often dressed and introduced to the audience as a girl; his exact place of birth is unknown (even though it’s most likely The Bronx).
