You might have looked at the bottom of a padlock and seen a small hole or two there. For the lock specifically, they have two crucial roles. One is to let water that gets into the lock to drain out. Locks are sometimes used outdoors, and therefore need to be able to deal with what the weather throws at them. If water couldn’t drain out, it would create rust and damage the lock. Another role is so you can put WD-40 or oil into the lock to loosen it up if it can’t open. Now, that’s something to think about when locking away your tool shed!
