This style phenomenon applies to tailored shirts. If you look at the back, you might find a loop in the middle of it. It’s there, thanks to Navy sailors on the East coast who used to hang their shirts using it. There’s very little space on a ship on which to hang clothes, so sailors used the hooks to do so. In 1960, the hook, called a locker loop, became a part of the mainstream style. Students used it during gym sessions to keep their shirts nice and creaseless. Makers of shirts still include the loop today as an indicator of quality and class.
