The police checked around the Howards’ residence and discovered countless BB pellets littered around the ground. This clearly indicates that the shells have been shot from a considerable distance. Otherwise, the convict would’ve easily been spotted by someone or the other.
Also, they found an excellent lead – a tree nearby that was surrounded by the same pellet casings. So it became evident that the shots have been made from the same direction. Now, the cops only had to search for the probable sources at the other end of the tree from where the firing could be done easily.
