There’s always that one hero who stands out—except, in this picture, he’s more of an unsung hero. Amidst a sandy scene of seaside smooches, this guy in the middle strikes a pose of sheer “I’m the fifth wheel here” energy.
Flanked by pairs of lovebirds locked in their own worlds, his expression of mild dissatisfaction is a masterclass in third-wheeling—scratch that, fifth-wheeling. But where did this term come from? It originates from adding an extra wheel to a two-wheeled vehicle, which would make it awkward. Today, we use it to describe an unnecessary person in the company of a couple (or two), just like our guy here.
