Hashima Island – Japan

In the pages of history, it is rare to see a whole city abandoned unless it is due to the effects of nuclear activity or a human-made disaster. Sadly, Hashima Island belongs to the latter category as it fell victim to the harmful effects of underwater mining activity.

The town progressed swiftly, and developments such as theatre, school, and apartments soon cropped up, but as soon as the mining shut down in 1974, the city became deserted. The settlement now lies in complete ruins and has started attracting tourists, prompting the government to open some areas for sightseeing.
