Like many parents, Lena and Pavel had high aspirations for their son, Richard. Despite being born in Ukraine, they knew that he would have a better chance of achieving his dreams in a more developed country. Therefore, they made the decision to relocate to Pennsylvania in the United States, hoping to land him better opportunities.
After settling in, the family returned to their sporting focus. After all, Lena and Pavel had spent their entire lives in the world of sports and were eager to resume their training. Pavel even brought his son with him to his own training sessions, teaching him the fundamentals of Taekwondo.
