One of the Last Great Sideshow Performers / Sealo the Seal Boy (1901 – 1980)

Born with a condition known as phocomelia, Stanislaus Berent was born in Pittsburgh and worked as a newspaper seller, card dealer, and sideshow performer. In the latter occupation, he was dubbed ‘Sealo the Seal Boy’—for obvious reasons. He performed with the World Circus Sideshow before moving to a retirement village in 1976.

One of the last great sideshow performers of the United States, Berent was also known for being an avid card player and enjoying his liquor. He had a stage partner: Toby, a chimpanzee! He’s one of the superstars from the freakshow era mentioned in the song “Lucky Day (Overture)” by singer-songwriter Tom Waits.
