Fashion designer Coco Chanel is a symbol of female empowerment and the epitome of female independence. In fact, the notion of relying on nobody but herself may stem from her upbringing, as she was an orphan. Chanel didn’t go anywhere near marriage—in spite of high profile affairs. She even once said that she never wanted to weigh a man down, claiming she wanted to weigh no more than a bird. It is suspected, though, that she may have mothered Andre Palasse who is said to be her nephew. Coco Chanel may have died in 1971 but her legacy still lives on with her luxury brand, Chanel.
