A red fox caught on camera appears to be poised to attack its prey, but a closer look reveals that it is simply relieving itself, a common behavior for many animals, including humans. But this animal may not just be innocently taking a leak. Foxes choose specific locations to mark as their territory by leaving droppings.
Anything novel or stimulating to the canines is also likely to be marked by them. They may even excrete on items like animal carcasses and, in urban areas, even people’s shoes. Interestingly, some wildlife experts have recommended gardeners urinate on their lawns, suggesting the scent can make the foxes believe the territory is occupied.
