Born in Los Angeles, California, Bateman began her career in show business at a young age, appearing in numerous commercials and TV shows. In 1982, she was cast in the role that would make her a household name—Mallory Keaton on Family Ties. The show ran for seven seasons and made Bateman one of the most popular teen stars of the 1980s.
In 2021 she tried her hands at directing movies, and her directorial debut, Violet, premiered in the SXSW Film. The short film, Five Minutes is also an acclaimed work of Bateman, which was written, directed, and produced by her.
