Exploring Glory Hole

The sign pointing to Glory Hole Rec. Area near New Melones Lake in California is bound to make travelers do a double-take because of the term’s modern, colloquial associations with adult slang. Yet, the name is steeped in history; in mining, a glory hole is an informal term for a place where valuable ore is found, often used during the Gold Rush era.

Not minding the name, the recreation area is actually known for its boating, fishing, and hiking opportunities. It offers visitors a scenic escape to enjoy the great outdoors, with the New Melones Dam spillway nearby being nicknamed the “glory hole” because of its funnel-like shape.
