Geronimo

Born in 1829 in what is now the Southwestern United States, Geronimo was a revered Apache leader famously known for his relentless fight against both Mexican and U.S. forces attempting to encroach on Apache territories. Originally named Goyahkla, he was dubbed Geronimo by Mexican soldiers, a name that echoed his legendary status as an indomitable warrior.

He spearheaded the Apache resistance during the tumultuous Apache Wars, embodying the struggle of Indigenous peoples against colonial subjugation. After surrendering in 1886—the last Native American leader to capitulate—Geronimo spent his remaining years in captivity but used public appearances to advocate for the rights and recognition of his people.
