Beyond the Textbooks: Historical Figures Whose Lives Were Anything But Ordinary!

Billy The Kid

Billy the Kid, whose real name was Henry McCarty, is one of the most famous figures from the American Old West. Born in 1859, he’s better known by his alias, William H. Bonney. He was infamous for his part in the Lincoln County War, a brutal feud in New Mexico involving competing business interests.

Despite his boyish looks and charm, Billy the Kid was a feared gunslinger, rumored to have killed 21 people—one for each year of his life, though that number might be exaggerated. His legend grew after a daring jailbreak in 1881, but his run came to an end when Sheriff Pat Garrett shot him later that year.
