Beyond the Textbooks: Historical Figures Whose Lives Were Anything But Ordinary!
Annie Oakley

Annie Oakley was a legendary sharpshooter who turned her incredible aim into international fame. Born in Ohio in 1860 as Phoebe Ann Moses, she learned to shoot as a young girl to hunt and help feed her family. Her skills caught the eye of Frank Butler, a marksman she later married. Together, they joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, where she amazed crowds with her ability to hit distant targets and moving objects.
Annie broke through gender barriers, showing that shooting wasn’t just for the guys. She also championed the idea that women should know how to handle a gun for self-defense, making her an early advocate for women’s empowerment.
