Known as “Old Hickory” for his extreme toughness and resolve, Andrew was celebrated as a champion of the commoner and a defender of American democracy. However, his presidency was marked by contentious policies, including the forced removal of Native American tribes from their ancestral lands, most notably the Trail of Tears.
