Melissa took a deep breath, her fingers tapping nervously on the counter. The simple transaction she had anticipated had turned into a nerve-wracking experience. The day was shaping up to be nothing like she had imagined, and certainly not for the better. Minutes dragged on until a triumphant “Aha!” finally rang out from the back room.
Mr. Harris’s footsteps grew louder as he approached. Melissa braced herself to conclude the sale and leave, but her plans were about to be disrupted. The jeweler came out with a folded piece of paper, which he swiftly tucked into his pocket before turning to his customer.
