If you’ve ever wondered why there are margins on the paper in notebooks, you might just find the reason very interesting. It goes back to quite a long time ago when homes often had rats living in them. The rats would gnaw on the edges of the paper, which was annoying. With a margin, even if the rat chews the edges of the paper, the work wouldn’t be eaten or crucial information written down wouldn’t disappear. Fortunately, the only thing we really have to worry about these days is the normal erosion at the edge of the notebook paper. And anyway, we’d call a rat exterminator if rats moved in!
