Stringing the laces in the opposite direction makes a loop on both sides of the shoes, allowing the wearer able to run the laces inside each loop crossing them as they do so. Next, by pulling down on the laces, a tighter lock is created for the feet. Then, the laces are tied are usual. This technique is called a heel lock or lace lock.
