The average cat only has nine lives, but Doja Cat appears to have had around 90. Looking back on how she's captured pop culture's attention as a hitmaker and sneaky fashionista since breaking through as a star with the No. 1 hit "Say So" just three years ago, it may almost feel like she's had as many looks and sounds in that short period as Madonna or Lady Gaga have in their whole careers.
That's illusory for someone with only three albums. However, 27-year-old Doja Cat has made enough of an impression as a musician and a fashion icon to earn 16 Grammy nominations, five of which she will be presenting at the 2023 awards show. These nominations include ones for record of the year for "Woman" and rap category recognition for her "Elvis" soundtrack song, "Vegas."
Doja Cat 'will gladly join in' on social media spats
Doja Cat has been transparent about her difficult interactions with online critics. The Woman rapper spoke with Variety for an interview released on Wednesday and talked about leveraging her online presence to respond to critics. She said that many people assume that since she replies to trolls, she is bad at handling them; however, in reality, that's part of the game.
She enjoys fighting trolls. " I have become accustomed to needing to react since I have been using the internet for a thousand years. Many believe that you must be weak if you are protecting yourself. Yet I consistently depend on responding to anyone who criticizes'.
Her history with online feuds
Doja Cat rebuked haters who mocked her eyelash-free ensemble in crimson Schiaparelli at Paris Fashion Week last week. She donned eyelashes as facial hair for her subsequent look for the Viktor and Rolf presentation, and before appearing, she commented on Instagram, "If lashes are all you desire, the lashes will get." She even responded appropriately to trolls who also blasted her for shaving her head the previous year.
Perhaps the biggest feud was between Doja and Stranger Things Star Noah Schnap. The actor revealed Doja's private conversation with him requesting a date with his co-star Joseph Quinn in a since-deleted TikTok. This was not the first time that Doja showed interest in Quinn. She nonetheless voiced uneasiness with Schnapp sharing her texts without permission during an Instagram Live. Doja chided the audience, saying, "The fact that this individual, Noah, did that... is so childish and made her uncomfortable."
Doja mentioned on her live that she had personally been in touch with Schnapp, and the actor has since replied. Schnapp made it plain that there are no bad feelings, at least not on his end, a week after Doja publicly called him out. He posted a TikTok video including "Kiss Me More" by Doja, and in the comments, he clarified, "Guys, everything is all okay." No harsh feelings, I apologized and continued to enjoy and support her music. Although Doja has not yet responded, there are allegations that she has been losing supporters since this incident began.
